Bi-polar lead battery developer Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC) has been awarded this year’s Battery Council Innovation award for its residential and small-scale stationary energy storage system.
The Michigan, US-based firm won the award for its Home Emergency Energy Storage System (HEES™) that uses the company’s GreenSeal battery.
Battery Council International (BCI) recognised the HEES system’s ability to address the growing need for homeowners and small commercial facilities to have back-up power, and its easy scalability to meet the diverse energy needs.
The award was presented during the 2022 Battery Council International conference in Naples, US.
The annual award— which recognises innovation in equipment, processes, services and products that advance the lead battery industry— was established to honour industry thought leader and former CEO of East Penn Manufacturing Co Sally Breidegam Miksiewicz.
Advanced Battery Concepts has pioneered bi-polar battery technology and architectures and applied it to the lead chemistry for its GreenSeal® technology suite and the basis of the GreenSeal battery.
Ed Shaffer, ABC’s founder and CEO, said: “We are proud to have commercialised the very first bi-polar battery incorporated into our HEES system, which we believe represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the lead battery.
“We continue to lead the way into the stationary, long-duration energy storage markets with proprietary, safe, low cost and responsible energy storage systems leveraging the benefits of bi-polar battery technology developed at our company.
“The HEES system is a first step in a multi-year product roadmap rollout by ABC that responds to the huge growing demand for economically viable energy storage solutions as fossil fuels give way to alternative generation sources of energy most notably renewable wind and solar sources.
“This Innovation Award from our battery industry peers is received with gratitude from each and every member of our ABC team.”
Roger Miksad, executive vice president of BCI, said: “Battery Council International is proud to recognise the power of innovation in the industry through the presentation of the Innovation Award.
“Year after year, we are continually impressed by the magnitude of advancements that come from the lead battery industry poised to deliver sustainable, practical and innovative outcomes for the future of the industry.”
Hollingsworth & Vose Co. and Daramic received honourable mentions for their submissions.
