US battery maker Advanced Battery Concepts said it signed a deal with Coram, a developer of renewably-fuelled electric generation projects, to supply 646MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The company will deploy the systems to customers in the Coachella Valley and Los Angeles regions.
ABC said its solution offered significantly lower acquisition, operation, maintenance and lifecycle costs versus lithium-ion competitors. The BESS is based on ABC’s recently released BOX-BE energy storage system.
BOX-BE is a large energy storage enclosure loaded with ABC’s proprietary EvergreenSeal bipolar lead-acid storage batteries.
The Coram deal is built on an initial project with three phases: an initial demonstration followed by two installations at two sites. They represent 646MWh, requiring about 2,000 BOX-BE units.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but company spokesman Jon Joslin said: “I can say that we are currently quoting BEES (BOX-BE units, ed.) at $350/kWh or about 30% less than lithium competitors.”
