Energy solutions firm AES Corporation is to market its Advancion lithium-ion storage technology outside the US for the first time.
The US company announced it will expand its presence worldwide by moving into the Asia, Oceania, Europe, Middle East and Africa market.
Its move into the burgeoning battery-backed energy storage system sector will be helped by power-management company Eaton and electronics firm Mitsubishi.
AES recently announced an alliance initiative with select leading companies who will offer Advancion directly to utilities and other energy participants.
“Advancion is infinitely scalable, geographically dispersable and a smart, modern and low-cost solution to today’s grid challenges,” said Steve Corwell, AES Europe Vice President.
The firm’s Advancion 4 array was first commercially deployed last November at its Warrior Run facility in Maryland, US, providing 10MW of interconnected energy storage.
Last week AES Netherlands unveiled an array featuring the Advancion 4 in Vlissingen. The system will provide fast response balancing services to the electric grid and enable greater levels of renewable energy integration while enhancing grid reliability.
The first deployment from Advancion includes more than 45,000 batteries supplied by Samsung SDI.
This year is widely expected to see a boom in the energy storage sector.
International research company IHS reported a 45% increase in energy storage project announcements in the last quarter of 2015, and is tracking 900 megawatts of energy storage projects scheduled for 2016.
“Suppliers and developers around the world are preparing for a record year in 2016, with significant growth projected in a wide range of regions and market segments,” said IHS Technology principal analyst Marianne Boust.
