US sodium-ion battery developer Alsym Energy has signed a 9GWh strategic partnership with Australian mining services company Erity to deploy battery energy storage systems (BESS) across mining operations, targeting one of the world’s most energy-intensive industrial sectors.
The companies have signed a Strategic Relationship Agreement (SRA) to jointly identify, develop and deliver battery energy storage systems for a range of mining applications, including renewable-powered microgrids, mineral extraction and processing, electric mining equipment, mobile data centres and mobile BESS.
Mining operations are among the largest industrial consumers of energy worldwide and many remote sites continue to rely heavily on diesel generators because they are located far from transmission networks. Replacing or reducing diesel generation with battery storage integrated with renewable energy has become a major decarbonisation objective for the sector.
The partners said the agreement combines Alsym’s non-flammable sodium-ion battery technology with Erity’s mining expertise to provide lower-cost off-grid energy storage for remote operations.

Initial deployments are planned at mining projects operated by Volt Resources and Resource Minerals International in Tanzania, Saudi Arabia, Finland and the US, with the companies also intending to pursue additional opportunities across the global mining industry.

According to the companies, the agreement establishes a framework for the deployment of advanced battery systems across multiple mining applications while creating opportunities for future collaboration in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, commercial and industrial energy storage and utility-scale battery projects.
