Altilium has officially opened its ACT 2 pilot EV battery recycling facility in Plymouth, welcoming over 20 strategic partners and stakeholders to a VIP ceremony.
The ACT 2 plant is the first of its kind in the UK, dedicated to recovering critical materials from end-of-life EV batteries.
International guests included senior representatives from Marubeni Corporation, Mizuho Bank, JOGMEC, the Embassy of Japan and Export Development Canada, highlighting the global collaboration driving clean energy innovation. UK public sector bodies such as the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), Innovate UK, DBT, NWF, UK Export Finance and Plymouth City Council were also in attendance.
Public funding from APC and Innovate UK has been instrumental in Altilium’s journey from R&D to pilot-scale deployment. During the EV battery recycling facility tour, guests met the leadership team and learned about Altilium’s expansion plans, including the ACT 3 commercial-scale plant and ongoing validation of low-carbon battery materials with automotive OEMs.
Dr Christian Marston, Altilium COO, commented, “We’re honoured to welcome so many distinguished guests here today to witness pilot-scale battery materials recycling in the UK. ACT 2 is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our incredible team and the unwavering support of our partners, who share our vision for a more sustainable future. Together, we’re showcasing how UK industrial policy, combined with public and private finance, can deliver the clean industries of the future.”
ACT 2 builds on Altilium’s proprietary EcoCathode™ process, which recovers over 95% of cathode metals with significantly lower emissions. The EV battery recycling pilot plant sets the stage for ACT 3 and ACT 4, expected to create over 250 skilled jobs and strengthen the UK’s battery supply chain.
