Annual worldwide installations of natural gas gensets will surpass 13 GW of capacity by 2018, according to a recent report by Navigant Research.
The report, “Natural Gas Generator Sets”, analyzes the global market potential for natural gas gensets, from less than 15 kW to 6 MW for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The study includes in-depth assessments of global regions for capacity installations, an analysis of global gas resource development, and profiles of the key industry players engaged in this market.
Mackinnon Lawrence, principal research analyst with Navigant Research, said: “With emissions restrictions and inexpensive natural gas pointing to long-term value for new installations, NG gensets are capturing increasing market share as a source of continuous or prime power.”
Although the outlook for growth is promising, the NG genset market remains fraught with complexity, said Lawrence. No single solution can be applied successfully to the entire addressable market, and with the exception of a few diversified companies, market participants remain highly specialized in one or two market segments, catering to a narrow set of needs.
For this reason, barriers to entry for new market participants are high, according to the report.
