Apatura has secured planning consent for a new 560MW/1120MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) near Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland – bringing its approved UK portfolio to over 2.1GW.
The 29-hectare site, adjacent to Cochno Road and roughly two miles from Clydebank, will connect to the Windyhill substation via underground cable. It will also link to the Drumchapel substation, located two miles away. This marks Apatura’s 11th approved BESS project in just two years, cementing its footprint in Scotland’s evolving energy landscape.
Andrew Philpott, chief development officer at Apatura, said, “The Whitehall project is in a carefully chosen strategic location that will directly support the UK’s energy security strategy. Once commissioned, it will play a key role in providing the resilient infrastructure network needed for a net zero future.”
Scottish ministers supported the project, stating in the Decision Letter that they “regard the proposed development as essential infrastructure. Through the provision of energy storage, it adds flexibility and resilience necessary to maintain secure and reliable supplies of energy to all our homes and businesses as our energy transition takes place.”
