Ascend Elements and GEM have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore joint initiatives in lithium-ion battery recycling and engineered materials production across Europe.
The collaboration aims to support the EU’s push for a circular battery economy, aligned with the EU Battery Regulation and Battery Passport initiative, which prioritise recyclability, traceability and recycled content in new cells.
The agreement outlines a strategic framework combining GEM’s expertise in large-scale recycling and engineered battery materials with Ascend Elements’ operational and commercial footprint in Europe. Together, the companies intend to build a regional network for battery recycling, critical mineral recovery, and sustainable materials manufacturing – addressing both regulatory requirements and growing market demand.
“This partnership with Ascend Elements is a milestone in realising GEM’s vision for a greener and more sustainable future,” said Professor Xu Kaihua, chairman of GEM. “By working together, we will drive innovation in battery recycling and engineered materials production, build a localised circular industrial ecosystem in Europe, and help meet the increasing regulatory and market requirements for recyclable and traceable batteries.”
