Construction has begun on a new battery industry laboratory building in Münster, Germany, intended to strengthen the region’s role as a European hub for battery research and industrial development.
The project, known as BATTL3, officially started with a groundbreaking ceremony on 10 March 2026. The facility will form part of the BatteryCityMünster cluster, which brings together research institutions, industry and start-ups across the battery value chain.
The six-storey building will provide around 1,600m² of specialised laboratory space alongside office and development areas for companies working on battery technologies. When completed, the site is expected to accommodate up to five companies, including small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups, industrial partners and international investors.

The project is being developed by Technologieförderung Münster (TFM), which hosted the ceremony attended by around 100 representatives from politics, industry and academia. Guests included Mona Neubaur, minister for economic affairs, industry, climate protection and energy for the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Tilman Fuchs, mayor of Münster.
BATTL3 integrating the research infrastructure in Münster
BATTL3 is intended to integrate companies more closely with the existing research infrastructure in Münster. The wider BatteryCityMünster ecosystem includes organisations such as the Fraunhofer Research Production Battery Cell, the MEET Battery Research Center, the Helmholtz Institute Münster and the Münster University of Applied Sciences.
The aim of the new facility is to strengthen collaboration between academic research and industry and to accelerate the transfer of battery innovations into commercial products and manufacturing processes.
Companies interested in locating at BATTL3 are already able to apply for laboratory and workspace within the building. Completion of the project is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027.
The development is being supported by funding from the European Union through the EFRE regional development programme.
