Doosan GridTech is building a 20MW lithium-ion battery storage system in the Mojave Desert for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
Doosan has been awarded the contract for the $19.2 million project at the utility’s Beacon Solar Plant (pictured). The batteries are set to manage 600MW of solar power and 135MW of wind power generated by LADWP’s utility-scale renewable projects.
LADWP said the BESS, expected to be ready by March 2018, will improve grid reliability issues.
Los Angeles has set a target of having 1,750MW of energy storage available to the city by 2025. LA’s mayor Eric Garcetti said: “With half of our energy portfolio expected to come from renewable sources by 2025 and continuing to grow from there, the Beacon battery storage system will help maximise the amount of solar we capture and deliver to Angelenos.”
