Canada’s Storage Power Solutions (SPS) has been selected to boost the expanding portfolio of battery energy storage systems in the US state Massachusetts.
SPS has been contracted by Industria Engineering to provide a 3.5MW/8.2MWh BESS for part of a solar-plus-storage project in the town of Grafton.
The new project— which follows a 1.5MW system SPS deployed for Industria Engineering in 2018— will be used to store excess energy from a 4MW front-of-the-meter solar farm, thereby increasing solar harvesting and shifting solar generation to peak loads on the substation.
Energy storage now qualifies as a ‘renewable portfolio standard clean peak resource’ in Massachusetts— which defines battery storage as “clean” energy that can be called upon during a defined “peak” period.
Massachusetts now has more than 2.1GW of solar energy generation and has increased its energy storage capacity target to 1GW by 2025.
Industria Engineering has thus far managed, constructed, or designed more than 175MW of solar facilities in the state.
“Energy storage projects are an increasingly important consideration for our clients in Massachusetts and significantly enhance the overall business case for renewable energy”, said Glenn McGillicuddy, VP of Industria Engineering.
