When is a battery show not a battery show? When what it features is mainly related to dealing with non energy storage issues like getting rid of heat and containing fires— at least that’s your scribe’s take on the much publicised Battery Show Europe at the Hannover Messe last week. I’ve renamed it— Vehicle electrification systems today or VEST.
And at VEST last week, the hot products were exactly in that ilk everything else was just motors and wiring looms.
Parker Hannifin Corporation Chomerics division THERM-A-GAP thermally conductive gels, which provide a high-performance thermal interface between an electric vehicle’s lithium-ion traction battery modules and the battery enclosure. Chomerics gels also provide a thermal interface for electronics components and modules in active safety systems, power electronics circuits and other automotive systems.
Also on show was PBT-225, an electrically conductive plastic that can be used to form robust and weight-saving gaskets and EMI shields.
Henkel showed its thermal interface materials (TIMs) providing robust management of heat generated during charging and operation. At the module level, Bergquist Gap Pad 1450 delivers a soft and complaint solution to move heat away from Li-I cells. And a good thing too, we noted. Because if you don’t get the heat out, you’ll almost certainly need to get Extover— Dennert Poraver’s answer to extinguishing lithium batteries fires.
The increasing number of lithium batteries used in private households also requires new methods of firefighting and risk prevention in this area, says the company. Extover is a special extinguishing agent based on post-consumer recycled glass that meets the safety requirements and is completely harmless to users and the environment. You just shovel it on and you wont have a disaster on your hands!
