Global mining company BHP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese battery giant BYD’s subsidiary FinDreams Battery Company (FDB).
The agreement covers solutions for BHP to tackle scope 1 and 2 emissions using both existing and emerging technologies across FDB’s operations.
It also covers powertrain battery solutions for heavy mining equipment and locomotives with adjacent flash-charging infrastructure.
The company has also agreed to explore BYD commercial vehicles and light vehicles for use in its mining applications.
This is to support its transition away from greenhouse gases by reducing its use of diesel, with a long-term goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
It hopes to also explore applications for BYD’s broader portfolio in energy storage and battery recycling as well as its battery cell development and electric light vehicle production.
Rashpal Bhatti, procurement officer, BHP Group, said, “This relationship is a further step towards BHP meeting our decarbonisation ambitions for our operations and helping to drive transformative change within the global resources industry. By joining forces with industry leaders like BYD, we are seeking solutions to help shape a more productive and more sustainable resources industry of the future.”
Jack Li, general manager of global commercial vehicle business unit, FDB, said, “The signing of this MOU represents a pivotal milestone, not only for FDB’s commitment to advancing the low-carbon revolution but also for accelerating decarbonisation across the global resources sector. Leveraging our unique expertise in mining electrification, I am confident this collaboration will drive transformative change, paving the way for a more sustainable future for all.”
