The largest operational battery energy storage system (BESS) in Great Britain is now live, delivering clean electricity to the grid with support from Statkraft.
Thurrock Storage, developed by battery storage specialist Statera Energy, is a 300MW/600MWh BESS scheme located at Tilbury in Essex. It has the capacity to power 680,000 homes for up to two hours. Statkraft signed a major power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statera in 2023, providing optimisation and a revenue floor structure to support project financing.
Statkraft’s London-based origination team is said to lead long-term energy transition trading in the UK, with over 4GW of renewable PPAs and 3.5GW of flexible assets under contract. Their proprietary technologies enable tailored asset optimisation, delivering cross-market performance with transparency and benchmarking to maximise returns.
Brian Lonn, Statkraft’s head of UK flexibility, said, “Statera Energy has delivered a nationally significant project that plays a vital role in advancing Great Britain’s energy transition.”
Lewis Elder, Statera’s director of commercial operations and policy, added, “We are delighted that Thurrock Storage has now entered commercial operations. Thanks to our close collaboration with Statkraft, the site is fully onboarded and active in the market.”
Statkraft continues to expand its energy trading and optimisation portfolio across Europe.
