A joint development agreement has been signed between the Munich-based energy storage company Mirai Power and energy storage owner-operator BW ESS. It includes plans to co-develop multiple utility-scale projects, each with a capacity of more than 50MW, which would add up to 1GW of energy storage projects in southern Germany.
BW ESS said Germany has become a growth hotspot, with the power market wanting to integrate large volumes of renewable energy capacity.
It claims Germany is Europe’s largest power market, and the most liquid, as around 7GWh of new storage is expected to be added in the country by 2026.
The battery chemistry and duration of each project is yet to be decided, it said.
BW ESS has partners in the UK, Australia, Italy, and Sweden alongside Germany. It claims to be developing and planning projects totalling 7GW of power.
The company has a total of 1.5GWh of projects under construction. It said they have different ranges of duration, such as the Bramley BESS project in the UK which is a 100MW/331MWh project. This project is now fully operational, claimed to be the largest of its kind in the UK, with capacity to meet electricity needs for 44,000 UK homes at peak demand.
It claims the Bramley BESS is the first European project to use the PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage system developed by Sungrow, which uses liquid cooling technology.
BW ESS said it has a seven-year tolling agreement with Shell Energy Europe for this project, signed in 2024.
Mirai Power was founded in 2024 by Julian Gerstner and Marco Frascati. It claims to build on a decade of experience through its founders in the battery energy storage systems (BESS) market.
Roberto Jiménez, executive director of BW ESS, said: “We’re excited to see the opportunities this partnership creates as we expand our presence in the German market.”
Marco Frascati, managing director of Mirai Power, added: “Our mission is to contribute to a sustainable and reliable energy supply – through future-proof, innovative BESS projects strategically sited throughout Europe. Southern Germany is a region with huge energy storage development potential, and our partnership with a global leader like BW ESS will help us accelerate our efforts to decarbonise the energy system.”
