Ford is set to source batteries for its electric vehicles through the China lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride battery maker BYD.
It is the first time the Chinese firm BYD (which stands for Build Your own Dreams) has made a deal with a major global automaker.
US vehicle OEM Ford Motor’s China venture with Changan Automobile is seeking government approval to build a plug-in hybrid model equipped with BYD’s batteries, according to a document published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Ford had not answered questions BEST put to them at the time of publishing. Those questions include when the first batteries would be delivered, how any batteries the deal was for, and how many years the deal would be in place?
In 2018, BYD has opened its six-square-kilometre plant in Qinghai Province— part of a reported multi-billion dollar investment to expand its domestic battery-making capacity to 60GWh.
