Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) said Japanese car manufacturer Honda will purchase 123GWh of batteries for pure electric vehicles (EVs) in China from CATL.
Honda said it is scaling up production and sale of its e:N model of EV. From 2024 to 2030, Honda will purchase CATL batteries for pure EVs in China. They will be made in CATL’s production base in Yichun, east China’s Jiangxi province.
In 2020, BEST reported that CATL and Honda signed an agreement to form a comprehensive strategic alliance on new energy vehicle lithium-ion batteries. This led the two companies to cooperate on joint development, supply, recycling and reuse of batteries.
Separately, CATL said its first plant outside of China – CATT in Germany – kicked off serial production of lithium-ion battery cells in December.
Matthias Zentgraf, CATL’s president for Europe, said: “We are working hard to ramp up production to full capacity, which is our top priority for the coming year.”
CATT received the permit for battery cell production from the state of Thuringia in April, for an initial capacity of 8GWh per year. Investment totals some €1.8 billion, said the company. It plans production capacity of 14GWh and up to 2,000 new jobs in Germany.
