CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) has introduced the Naxtra Battery, the world’s first sodium-ion battery to meet China’s new national safety standard GB 38031-2025, effective July 2026.
This milestone positions sodium-ion technology for mass electric vehicle integration, with CATL targeting full-scale deployment in 2026.
Sodium-ion batteries operate by transferring sodium ions between cathode and anode, offering high energy density, rapid charging, and superior thermal stability. CATL’s Naxtra Battery achieves an energy density of 175Wh/kg – currently the highest among sodium-ion batteries – and retains 90% usable power at -40°C, with no significant degradation at 10% state of charge under extreme conditions.
Strategic collaboration with Li Auto will see the battery integrated into future EV models, supporting cost-effective, high-performance vehicles. The battery is also compatible with CATL’s Choco-Swap ecosystem, enabling rapid battery exchanges in under 100 seconds using modular #20 and #25 packs.
The Naxtra Battery passed rigorous testing by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, demonstrating resilience against thermal diffusion, bottom impact, and fast-charging stress. CATL’s Freevoy Dual-Power system further enhances cold-weather performance by combining Naxtra with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) anode, offering extended range without compromising efficiency.
