Chinese scientists have agreed to work with researchers at the University of Birmingham, UK, to develop a laboratory specialising in new energy storage technologies.
The two sides will focus on grid-scale cryogenic energy storage research and look at different storage materials, devices, system integration and optimisation.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed last week between the university and the State Grid of China’s Smart Grid Research Institute, which is owned by China’s State Grid (SGCC).
SGCC’s already has ties with the university, with both sides collaborating in developing low-carbon energy systems in the UK and in China.
Professor Yulong Ding, Director of the Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage, said: “Such energy systems need to deal with reduced base load generation, high renewable penetrations and electrification of transport and heat.”
