Battery maker Clarios said it agreed a supply contract with a major original equipment manufacturer for its new high performance recharge absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery.
Clarios did not disclose the OEM name, but Clarios spokesperson Christian Riedel said: “It is a large American automobile manufacturer. The model in which the AGM high performance battery will be installed will be a popular pick-up truck.”
He said production is planned for Q4 2026 in Clarios’s US Toledo AGM plant. It will be a seven-year programme, with an expected production rate of 500,000 batteries per year – some 3.5 million batteries, he added.
The company claims its new 12V lead battery has improved rechargeability compared to other AGM batteries. That will help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, it said.
The battery will be supplied to North America for use in light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles.
The company said AGM batteries are being used across the industry to support increased demands on the low-voltage systems found in every vehicle. It added that traditional AGM batteries are being adopted to support features like lane assist, side blind zone alerts, engine start-stop cycling, adaptive cruise control, infotainment systems, and connected services and applications.
Clarios did not disclose the value of the contract.
