Chinese energy storage supplier Contemporary Nebula Technology Energy (CNTE) has supplied a 37.95 MW/41.7 MWh lithium iron phosphate battery energy storage system for the Modlany Energy Park in the Czech Republic.
The completed system is the country’s largest operational BESS and provides just over one hour of storage at rated output. It forms part of an energy park combining battery storage with a 42.7 MW solar photovoltaic plant on a former mining spoil site near Teplice in northern Czech Republic.
Czech engineering and implementation company Katemo Group is behind the project, while Greenbuddies carried out engineering, procurement and construction work. Katemo has said the battery storage capacity at the site could eventually be expanded to 130 MWh.
CNTE supplied 11 liquid-cooled STAR T-285 containers, each rated at 3.45 MW/3.793 MWh. The containers use lithium iron phosphate cells supplied by CATL, which holds a 20% stake in CNTE.
The system is connected to a high-voltage substation and will provide fast-response frequency regulation and grid-balancing services. It can also store surplus generation from the solar plant and release electricity when required, as well as participate in energy trading.
CNTE said its STAR T system supports 1P charging and discharging and can be configured for applications lasting between one and four hours. The company claims round-trip efficiency of more than 93%.
The liquid-cooling system is designed to maintain a temperature difference of no more than 4°C within each container. Other safety and monitoring features include four-level fire protection, precise fire-alarm positioning and continuous DC insulation monitoring.
An integrated energy management system and cloud platform provide real-time monitoring, system control and lifecycle asset management. Katemo’s own K-EMS control system manages charging and discharging, consumption regulation, energy storage and system monitoring.
The project deploys 11 CNTE STAR T-285 containerised energy storage systems
The 11 battery containers incorporate a total of 45,760 cells. Each 20-foot container weighs around 36 tonnes and is connected through two Delta inverters and a separating transformer.
The Modlany installation replaces a 30 MW project commissioned by Czech independent power producer Decci Group in 2024 as the country’s largest operational battery storage system.
CNTE was founded by Huang Shilin, a co-founder and former vice-chairman of CATL. The companies maintain close commercial links in addition to CATL’s shareholding in the storage-system supplier.
The Modlany project is CNTE’s largest completed installation in the Czech Republic and follows an agreement with Katemo covering the potential supply of up to 500 MWh of battery systems for the Czech market.
