Comau has unveiled a new €1 million dry room laboratory at its Grugliasco headquarters in Italy, aimed at advancing battery cell manufacturing technologies and accelerating innovation in solid-state and next-generation systems.
The proprietary, humidity-controlled environment is designed to support testing and development of machinery for lithium-ion and lithium-metal cell production.
The dry room features three proto-test spots – two operating at -40° dew point (DP) and one at -50° DP – making it suitable for work with moisture-sensitive materials such as lithium metal and electrolytes. It is equipped with Comau’s Racer 5 Sensitive Environments robot and will be accessible to customers, universities and industry associations, alongside the company’s Global Competence Center team of more than 40 engineers.
The facility plays a key role in developing and validating cell assembly processes such as electrode manufacturing, stacking and both laser and mechanical notching. It’s a strategic investment intended to streamline the commercialisation of new battery formats and cell technologies.
“As recently demonstrated by the launch of a new full line of Cobots and AMRs, as well as welding technologies, Comau continues to invest in research and development across all of its strategic sectors, including e-Mobility,” said Pietro Gorlier, chief executive officer, Comau. “Our new dry room, which allows us to experiment with new battery cell formats and materials in a controlled, humidity-free environment, reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing industrial innovation while also reinforcing our presence and investments in Italy.”
