Dispatch Grid Services, the Amsterdam-based battery storage solutions company, has started construction of the previously announced Dordrecht 45MW/90MWh BESS. It surpasses the 30MW/68MWh Pollux project by developer SemperPower as the largest stand-alone BESS in the Netherlands.
The project will be completed in partnership with infrastructure fund Epico2, Macquarie Capital and lender ABN AMRO. Dispatch said the Dordrecht storage system marks the first of many in a strategic alliance between Dispatch and Macquarie Capital. They aim to develop up to 3GWh of BESS projects across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany over the next seven years.
“Large-scale energy storage is the missing link in the energy transition,” said Eiso Vaandrager, CEO and co-founder of Dispatch. “The Netherlands must deploy at least 9GW of battery energy storage capacity by 2030 – Europe must maintain a balanced energy grid.”
The battery, consisting of 144 Fluence cubes with advanced lithium-ion sealed cells, has a capacity of 90MWh. It will on average store enough energy supply equivalent for 21,500 households per day.
“Fluence has a strong history in the Netherlands, deploying the first ever utility-scale battery storage system. We continue to invest in our Dutch presence, with the Netherlands being a critical part of Fluence’s future growth path as demand for energy storage is accelerating,” said Paul McCusker, SVP and president EMEA at Fluence, a Siemens and AES company.
Equans Netherlands is responsible for the engineering and construction of the BESS. Dutch energy company Eneco will optimise the battery to maintain this balance without increasing local congestion.
