UniEnergy says Washington flow battery project is world's largest

US vanadium flow battery firm UniEnergy Technologies (UET) has said a 2MW/ 8MWh flow battery system it has delivered on the grid in Snohomish County, Washington state, is currently the largest capacity containersed flow battery system in the world.

The installation is placed in 20 connected shipping containers and will be used by the Snohomish Public Utility District (SNOPUD) - a US public utility provider which has also invested in lithium-ion battery installations.

UET’s vanadium redox flow battery is based on electrolyte chemistry developed with funding from the US Department of Energy at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

PNNL said its involvement includes “providing analytical and technical supports to help UET test the performance of the battery systems and evaluate the economic impacts of the various services provided by them”.

Last month, BBB reported Californian utility San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has planned a four-year vanadium redox flow battery storage pilot project with Japan’s electronics manufacturer Sumitomo Electric (SEI).
