Maritime energy storage firm Corvus Energy is to supply its lithium-ion battery storage products to Norwegian maritime electronics firm, Elmarin AS, for three new fishing vessels with battery-based hybrid propulsion.
Canada-based Corvus said the vessels, to be delivered next year, will each be equipped with 250kwh Orca battery systems. The batteries will supply electrical power for propulsion systems and electrical networks.
Corvus’ senior VP for business development Halvard Hauso said: “This project is a good example of how the marine industry is quickly moving towards hybrid power for more cost effective and environmentally-friendly operations.”
Head of electric propulsion systems at Elmarin, Lars Eide, said the projects— which received undisclosed financial support from the Norwegian government’s energy and climate technology agency, Enova SF— “will be trend-setters for this market”.
Last year, Corvus received the ‘Environmental Award’ for its significant contribution to reducing the environmental footprint of the off-shore vessel industry.
