Corvus Energy has secured a landmark contract to supply battery systems for seven fully electric ferries being built for Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL).
The order, placed by Remontowa Shipbuilding in Poland, represents the largest agreement in Corvus Energy’s history and marks a major step forward for zero‑emission ferry operations in the UK.
“It’s truly remarkable to witness seven identical ferries being constructed at the same shipyard,” says Stein Ruben Larsen, senior vice president of sales at Corvus Energy. “This project is significant for Corvus Energy not only because of its scale, but also because of the outstanding collaboration we’ve had with the designer, the shipyard, and the integrator throughout the entire process.”
The vessels form part of CMAL’s Small Vessel Replacement Program, which aims to modernise the Loch‑class fleet, cut emissions, and strengthen transport links for Scotland’s island communities. Each ferry will use a 5.7MWh Corvus Dolphin NxtGen Energy Storage System, totalling 40MWh across the series. Deliveries will run from 2026 to 2028.
The project brings together international expertise: naValue provided the concept design, LMG Marin developed the basic design, and Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting delivered the electrical and detailed design, with ABB responsible for integration.
Corvus and Remontowa have worked together since 2018, with close to 20 joint projects completed.
The seven electric ferries will operate on west coast routes including Colintraive–Rhubadoch, Sconser–Raasay and Tobermory–Kilchoan.
