Indian battery manufacturer Delectrik Systems is to deploy a 100MWh vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) at the Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat.
The company said it secured the tender in collaboration with infrastructure company Bondada Engineering. The project was awarded by NTPC Renewable Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian power utility NTPC.
Scheduled for deployment in 2027, the system will use Delectrik’s non-containerised flow battery architecture, developed for large commercial, industrial and utility-scale applications.
The companies have not disclosed the battery’s power rating, discharge duration or contract value.
Delectrik described the installation as India’s first utility-scale flow battery and the country’s first non-lithium utility-scale BESS. It said the system would be designed, engineered and manufactured entirely in India.
Founder and CEO Dr Vishal Mittal said: “The first utility scale Flow Battery project is a milestone not just for the company but the country as a whole.”
Mittal said the firm was targeting orders totalling at least 1GWh of flow battery capacity over the next 12 months, covering India, Australia, Southeast Asia, Africa and other markets.
The company has also established two wholly owned subsidiaries as part of plans to expand upstream and downstream. Delectrik Resources plans to enter vanadium oxide production and, ultimately, mineral beneficiation and ownership of vanadium assets.
Delectrik Esaas intends to offer energy storage as a service to commercial and industrial customers, including data centres.
The Khavda renewable energy park is expected to reach 30GW of generation capacity by 2029. NTPC has more than 90GW of installed power capacity and is targeting 149GW by 2032, including 60GW of renewable energy.
The company previously installed a smaller 3MWh version of its non-containerised VRFB system at an NTPC site in Greater Noida in 2025.
The company said long-duration storage would be important to the large-scale integration of renewable generation into India’s electricity grid.
