DNV has teamed up with Madrid-based ACCIONA Energía to assess second-life battery energy storage systems (BESS) against European standards and best practices.
The collaboration supports ACCIONA Energía’s initiative to repurpose batteries from its Silence electric scooter fleet in line with EU Batteries Regulation (EU 2023/1542), which promotes circular economy principles in electronics.
The project focuses on adapting used e-scooter batteries for stationary, lower-power applications – aiming to extend their useful life, reduce waste, and shrink the carbon footprint of ACCIONA Energía’s asset base. Working with second-life integrator Beeplanet, the company has developed a 1MW prototype BESS using repurposed units.
DNV is conducting a detailed review covering first-life use, repurposing methods, testing protocols, and the system’s thermal, electrical, and safety architecture.

The partnership represents a notable step in sustainable battery lifecycle management and reflects a broader industry shift toward circular energy solutions.
