Telecom operator DU is adding 70 hybrid cell sites to its network of back-up sites in the UAE to reduce diesel consumption. It will use technology from Heliocentris to convert off-grid sites to hybrid power sites.
The Heliocentris system combines the use of diesel generator and batteries with a smart energy manager, which cycles the site’s load between the two, this reduces the run time of the generator.
Heliocentris’s systems are installed in 137 of DU’s base station sites and have been operational for over a year. They helped the company reduce CO2 emissions by more than 2500 tons in 2012.
The UAE has a governmental strategy to reduce diesel consumption and CO2 emissions by 50%.
