Echandia Group has been selected to supply a new battery system for the Danish electric ferry E/F Ellen, operated by Ærøfærgerne.
The company will deliver a 3.2MWh LTO (lithium-titanate oxide) battery system to replace the vessel’s original 4.3MWh NMC installation. Designed for a 15-year lifetime, the new system supports multiple daily fast-charging cycles with high efficiency.
Echandia’s LTO technology is tailored for high-frequency, fast-charging RoPax ferry operations where reliability is essential. The system enables more than 20,000 charge cycles and can be recharged in approximately 25 minutes – an improvement of 10 minutes compared with the previous system.
Delivered in 2019, Ellen was the world’s first long-range, pure electric ferry and remains a symbol of zero-emission passenger transport. Operating between the island of Ærø and the Danish mainland, the vessel’s original battery system is now being replaced after eight years of service due to uneven wear and reduced capacity.
Scheduled to enter operation in May 2026, the new system will be delivered and commissioned within six months.
