Eku Energy has commissioned two utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Essex and Buckinghamshire, marking a significant milestone in its UK deployment strategy.
The Basildon and Loudwater sites, developed in collaboration with global BESS supplier NHOA Energy, have completed testing and verification and are now fully operational. Together, they contribute 130MWh of installed capacity to the UK grid, delivering essential balancing and ancillary services.
Both projects are engineered to support grid stability at local and national levels, enhancing energy security and system resilience for UK consumers.
Commenting on the commissioning, Eku Energy CEO, Daniel Burrows, said, “The commissioning of Loudwater BESS and Basildon BESS creates diversity of our operating portfolio in the United Kingdom. The Loudwater BESS system comprises 39MW/55MWh and occupies 0.6 acres near High Wycombe. Designed with a low visual profile and rural-sensitive colour scheme, the site will be traded by Statkraft Energy on behalf of Eku Energy.
Basildon BESS, Eku Energy’s first two-hour duration system in the UK, delivers 28MW/56MWh across 1.6 acres. Strategically located near solar PV, gas peakers, and 400kV substations, it will support National Grid operations in a key network zone ahead of the Tilbury–Norwich transmission upgrade. Habitat Energy will manage trading for the Basildon site.
Both systems feature BESS technology supplied by NHOA Energy, with infrastructure and auxiliary systems provided by BOP contractor ESM Power. Under long-term service agreements, NHOA Energy will oversee operations and maintenance to ensure sustained performance and reliability.
