Energy Vault has announced an agreement with the US-based energy provider Consumers Energy for two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects totalling 75MW in capacity and 300MWh in duration in Michigan.
The BESS’ will be deployed in Iosco and Bay Counties, with deliveries expected for Q4 2025, and construction for Q1 2026 with commercial operation to begin in Q4 2026.
A 45MW/180MWh BESS, named Weadock, will be at the site of a retired power plant in the Hampton township, with the 30MW/120MWh Iosco County BESS located at the Oscoda township.
Both BESS projects will use the firm’s fully integrated B-Vault design, which has battery and inverter choices for AC and DC configurations, and its Vault-OS energy management system.
They will also be charged and discharged daily and designed to dispatch stored renewable energy at hours of peak consumption to meet energy demand.
The company has said that its B-Vault portfolio consists of more than 2GWh in total with projects either deployed or currently in development, and it is also in the process of obtaining planning permits with coordination from township officials to support the development of the project.
Marco Terruzzin chief revenue officer, Energy Vault, said, “As the energy transition accelerates, utilities like Consumers Energy are stepping up to ensure grid reliability while integrating more renewable energy. We are proud to partner with Michigan’s largest energy provider on these critical projects, which will not only help meet peak demand with energy but also exemplify how advanced storage technologies can support grid resilience at scale.”
