Engie and Ignis have agreed a long‑term Flexibility Purchase Agreement covering several battery energy storage system projects across Spain, totalling 625 MWh of installed capacity.
Under the ten‑year arrangement, Engie will access battery flexibility in the day‑ahead market, while Ignis secures the revenues generated by the assets, operates the systems and optimises their role in the electricity system’s balancing services.
The BESS portfolio is scheduled to enter operation in 2028. The batteries will store energy during periods of peak renewable generation and release it when demand requires, helping reduce exposure to market volatility and supporting overall system stability.
The deal strengthens Engie’s position in the international market for storage and flexibility, advancing its strategy to develop technology‑driven battery solutions. Ignis, which last year became the first independent operator in Spain to manage a stand‑alone battery in the market, further reinforces its commitment to energy storage.
Santiago Bordiú, Head of Ignis Energy, said: “In addition to securing recurring revenue alongside a top-tier counterparty like Engie, this agreement allows us to continue maximising the value of these assets thanks to our expertise in balancing the electricity system. In this way, Ignis continues to contribute to the flexibility of the Spanish electricity system and the electrification of our economy.”
