LEAG Clean Power and Fluence Energy have confirmed plans to build Europe’s largest battery energy storage system in Jänschwalde, Germany.
The 1GW/4GWh GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 will be Fluence’s largest single storage project globally and will be powered by its Smartstack™ platform.
The project marks a major milestone for both companies. LEAG Clean Power continues to develop its GigawattFactory concept, integrating photovoltaic and wind energy with flexible power plants and large-scale storage across the Lusatian region and beyond.
“With this project, we are igniting another growth engine for our GigawattFactory,” said Adi Roesch, CEO of the LEAG Group. “By constructing gigascale storage facilities, we are addressing one of the biggest challenges of the energy transition: the constant availability of energy regardless of the availability of renewable energies.”
Fluence President and CEO Julian Nebreda added, “This flagship project demonstrates that when expertise, vision, and courage come together, a major transformation is possible.”
The battery energy storage system will deliver grid services, support energy trading, and enhance Germany’s energy security. “The size of this project makes it something special,” said Thomas Brandenburg, managing director of LEAG Clean Power.
