Battery maker Fiamm has secured a deal to supply its advanced flooded lead-acid technology to power Ford’s start-stop vehicles.
Fiamm Energy Technology will supply the ecoForce batteries from its Veronella plant in Italy.
Advanced flooded batteries (AFB) are suitable for start-stop applications because they are better equipped to support electrical loads while the engine is off, and power deep cycling associated with frequent starts and stops, said Paolo Perazzi, head of the mobility business in FIAMM Energy Technology.
Fiamm Energy Technology estimates the European start-stop original equipment battery demand was more than 16 million units in 2019 and the replacement market could reach 23.5 million units in 2025.
Analysts Infiniti Research predict the start-stop battery market is poised to grow by $ 7.85 billion during 2020-2024, progressing at a CAGR of 22% during the forecast period.
Meanwhile, analysts Global Market Insights believe annual installation of start-stop batteries in Europe will exceed 20 million units by 2026.
