Fortescue has expanded the reach of its battery intelligence platform, Elysia, through the acquisition of US-based on‑site controls specialist Zitara.
The move brings together Elysia’s established cloud‑driven analytics with Zitara’s precision on‑premises control technology, creating a combined battery intelligence suite aimed at maximising revenue, extending asset life and improving safety for Battery Energy Storage applications.
By integrating both cloud and on‑site capabilities, Fortescue strengthens its position in the rapidly growing Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector. The company becomes the first to deploy the full technology stack across its own large‑scale storage projects, which are central to achieving its Real Zero by 2030 ambition. Fortescue is currently rolling out 4–5GWh of storage in the Pilbara, Australia, to support grid stability as it decarbonises its iron ore operations.
For BESS operators, the enhanced Elysia platform offers real‑time control paired with advanced analytics, designed to optimise trading performance, improve asset longevity and support safe operation.
Elysia managing director Tim Engstrom said, “The acquisition of Zitara will expand the capabilities of our battery intelligence division, bringing together world-class cloud analytics with real time on-premises controls, complimenting the existing work of Elysia and strengthening our position in the Battery Energy Storage market.” He added that “Integrating real time on-site control systems with Elysia’s proven analytics gives us a unique, globally scalable platform.”
The acquisition also strengthens Fortescue’s presence across major BESS regions including the US, Australian and European markets, expected to exceed 500GWh combined within five years.
