Frontier Power UK has welcomed Ofgem‘s provisional assessment of projects submitted under the first application window of the UK’s Long Duration Electricity Storage (LDES) Cap and Floor scheme, with the company expecting at least one of its projects to receive a “minded-to award”.
The company said Ofgem’s provisional assessment indicates that at least one Frontier Power UK LDES project is expected to secure support under the framework. It added that several other projects based on vanadium flow and zinc battery technologies were also ranked highly among candidate projects.
Frontier Power UK said it remains confident in the quality and deliverability of its portfolio and will continue to engage with Ofgem during the consultation period. The company believes its projects support the UK government’s Clean Power 2030 mission by strengthening energy security and enabling greater deployment of renewable electricity.
The company said it hopes the consultation process will result in additional Frontier projects being included in the final Window 1 awards.
Frontier Power continuing its wider UK pipeline
Alongside the Cap and Floor process, Frontier Power UK is continuing to expand its wider UK pipeline. Following the acquisition of the Ayr and Busby projects from Apatura Energy, the company is advancing the two sites, which together represent 350MW/2.8GWh of long-duration energy storage capacity.
Both projects have received Gate 2 notifications and are expected to use Eos Z3 zinc battery technology, providing what Frontier described as a near-term route to deploying non-lithium long-duration energy storage in the UK.
Frontier Power UK said long-duration energy storage will play an increasingly important role in supporting power system security, integrating renewable generation and meeting rising electricity demand from electrification, data centres and wider load growth.
The company said it will continue developing projects with its technology partners as part of its broader strategy to support the UK’s Clean Power 2030 ambitions and long-term energy security.
