Gen-I and Sunotec have signed a five-year partnership agreement to manage battery energy storage systems (BESS), marking a significant step in advancing large-scale energy storage across South East Europe.
As part of Sunotec’s investment plan, two major battery energy storage facilities are under construction in Bulgaria. The first will deliver 150MW of power with a storage capacity of 379MWh, while the second will provide 50MW and 126MWh. Both sites are scheduled to be fully operational by March 2026.
Under the agreement, Gen-I will act as the exclusive asset optimiser and trading partner, overseeing charging and discharging cycles, market participation, and ancillary services. Its role includes real-time dispatching, optimisation, and revenue management, supported by 24/7 algorithmic systems.
The collaboration is built on a long-term revenue-sharing model, aligning Sunotec as asset owner with Gen-I as optimisation partner. This structure aims to maximise market value, ensure stable operation, and maintain regulatory compliance.
Igor Koprivnikar, PhD, MBA, member of the management board of Gen-I, said, “This partnership marks a significant milestone for both Gen-I and Sunotec. Together, we are managing battery energy storage projects with a total capacity of approximately 200MW. It’s the first large-scale cooperation of this kind for Gen-I and an important step in expanding our portfolio of energy storage assets under management as an asset optimiser.”
