Germany intelligent battery specialist BMZ GmbH has opened two facilities to develop, produce and test up to 80 million lithium-ion batteries or around 5GWh per year.
The 12,000m2 of new production, logistics and administration area is in addition to the existing 7,000 square meter production facility at its German headquarters in Karlstein, which was completed five years ago.
The two new buildings are the first of six which will form part of a planned 55,000 square meters which includes creating four additional production, laboratory and administration buildings up to 2020.
BMZ owner and CEO Sven Bauer (left in the picture) is reported as saying: “With the discussion on subsidies for e-cars it is easy to forget that lithium-ion batteries can also be used for e-bikes, e-tools, electric garden tools, storage units for renewable energies, lifting and transport vehicles, diggers etc.
“Different to e-cars we already experience a real boom in demand.
“We estimate that the demand in the segments mentioned will increase by approximately 15 to 30% annually.”
