Global grid‑scale battery storage saw another record year in 2025, with more than 246GWh BESS added worldwide — a 46% rise compared with 2024, according to Rho Motion. December delivered the biggest monthly total, exceeding 71GWh.
Europe added over 10 GWh of new large‑scale capacity, up 28% year‑on‑year, with the UK contributing around 4GWh and leading regional growth. The US brought roughly 47GWh online, a 19% increase, despite fewer overall projects as developers shifted toward larger BESS installations.
Australia recorded one of the strongest surges globally, adding 9.8GWh — a 216% jump — supported by a rapidly expanding project pipeline.
China dominated the global picture. “The majority of December’s growth was in China, where 65GWh of new grid-scale capacity became operational, making up 92% of installations in the final month of 2025.” Over the full year, “66% of grid-scale demand came from China, with the US making up 19% and Europe 4%”, said Pete Tillotson, Senior Research Analyst at Rho Motion.
China’s December total alone exceeded the US annual figure by more than 15GWh, highlighting the scale of its deployment push. December accounted for around 41% of China’s yearly additions, with installations rising ~135% year‑on‑year. Analyst Calvin Xu noted that “Targets announced in September… aiming to reach 180GW… further indicate the direction for China’s BESS market in the coming years.”
