General Motors claims to be the first North American automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to use an ultracapacitor-based voltage stabilization system (VSS) as part of its stop-start system.
The VSS, developed by Continental Automotive systems and supplied by Maxwell Technologies, will be a standard feature on most Cadillac ATS and CTS vehicles to lower fuel costs, improve performance and reduce emissions.
Exceptions will be the ATS-V, CTS-V and CT6 models.
Maxwell ultracapacitor-based VSSs are already used by Peugeot, Citroen and Lamborghini, in total more than 1 million vehicles on the road today, claims the company.
