Honda Motor Co and GS Yuasa International announced a joint venture on Wednesday to set up a new battery company.
The two have for some time been discussing collaboration on high-capacity, high-output lithium-ion batteries, mainly for electric vehicles, they said.
The new company will continue this and will be called Honda – GS Yuasa EV Battery R&D Co.
It is scheduled to begin operations before end-2023. This is subject to authorities’ approvals.
Koichi Yamamoto, coming president of the company, said it will fully leverage the strengths of the two companies and establish a strong presence in the rapidly expanding battery market.
GS Yuasa also offers a range of lead-acid automotive batteries.
