Chinese solar and energy storage company Hoymiles has launched its third-generation plug-in residential battery system, introducing hybrid and AC-coupled models aimed at increasing home energy storage capacity, safety and energy management capabilities.
The new HiBattery 4020 Series comprises the HiBattery 4020 X hybrid system, which connects directly to photovoltaic modules, and the HiBattery 4020 AC, designed for integration with existing residential solar installations. The systems will be available across Europe from this month.
Both models offer 4kWh of battery capacity, expandable to 16kWh through additional battery modules. They incorporate a built-in 2.5kW inverter with a maximum DC/AC efficiency of 96.5%, while the 4020 X includes four MPPT inputs and supports up to 4kW of PV input.
Hoymiles: maximising solar self-consumption
Hoymiles said the systems are intended both to maximise solar self-consumption and to provide backup power during grid outages. The company said the batteries can supply essential household loads including refrigeration, lighting and medical equipment, and can also be used in off-grid applications.
A central feature of the new platform is the company’s AI Energy Management System (AI-EMS), which uses a proprietary artificial intelligence model trained on more than 30 million parameters. According to Hoymiles, the system recalculates charging and discharging strategies every three hours using electricity pricing, weather forecasts and household consumption patterns.
The company said the AI-EMS platform includes AI-driven time-of-use optimisation and an Energy Ledger dashboard that provides real-time monitoring of energy consumption, savings and system performance.
The systems use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells and incorporate what Hoymiles describes as 48 layers of battery management system protection. Additional safety features include an integrated aerosol fire suppression system, pressure relief mechanisms, overheat protection and intelligent self-heating designed to support operation between -20°C and 55°C. The units are rated IP66 for dust and water resistance.
“Home energy storage must be fundamentally safe before it can be truly accessible,” said Dr Yang Bo, chief executive officer of Hoymiles.
“HiBattery is designed to provide peace of mind in every scenario—from daily use to unexpected emergencies.”
The launch expands Hoymiles’ residential storage portfolio, which already includes smaller plug-and-play battery products targeted at balcony solar and microinverter installations. Earlier HiBattery systems were designed around capacities of approximately 1.9kWh and supported AC-coupled residential storage applications.
