Solar company Canadian Solar Solutions (Canadian Solar) is to supply 4MW of lithium-ion energy storage to support the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) grid in Ontario, Canada.
The energy storage system is aimed to provide 2.76MWh reactive power, voltage support and bulk energy storage services to the IESO using stationary lithium battery technology. The Canadian solar specialist is contracted for maintenance and operation services for 36 months.
“This marks a new milestone for Canadian Solar as we make further progress on our move forward from being a module manufacturer to becoming a total energy solution provider,” said Shawn Qu, chairman and chief executive officer of Canadian Solar.
The contract is part of IESO’s energy storage project in which it selects five companies to provide it with approximately 34MW of energy storage capacity over a three-year period.
Other awarded companies include Hecate Energy with 14.8MW of battery storage, Convergent with 12MW using battery and flywheel storage, Hydrogenics with 2MW using hydrogen technology and Dimplexwill will provide thermal storage for 0.74MW.
Canadian Solar Solutions is a subsidiary of solar power company Canadian Solar.
