Canadian VRB flow battery maker promotes CTO to top seat

Fri, 09/04/2020 - 11:00 -- Paul Crompton

Vanadium redox battery developer VRB Energy has promoted its chief technology officer and architect of the firm’s Gen3 cell stack design to CEO.

Dr. Mianyan Huang has overseen a series of tests for the Gen3 system that led to the Canadian headquartered firm receiving grant funding from the Beijing Government Committee for High and New Technology Development.

As well as CTO, Dr. Huang had served as the president of VRB Energy China and on the board of directors since joining VRB Energy in 2007.

He succeeds John Wang, who is retiring but who will remain as an advisor to the company.

The company reported testing of its new cell stack design for its Gen3 product yields a 30% improvement in current density, and is based on its proprietary in-house membrane and bipole materials, as well as advancements in electrode and cell frame design optimisation.

Dr. Huang said: “This testing shows that our Gen3 technology will be able to achieve a 10% improvement in overall efficiency while simultaneously reducing battery size and lowering cost for our customers.

“This is just one of many improvements that will enable us to deliver a complete energy storage system for less than forecasted lithium-ion battery pricing, and with 15-40% better levelised cost of energy (LCOE) performance.”
