American Manganese signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 14 April with e-mobility battery developer Voltabox of Texas— a subsidiary of Volabox AG— outlining a partnership to recycle lithium-ion batteries.
The firms aim to provide end-of-life lithium-ion batteries for the commercial-scale recycling of cathode materials using the Canadian firm American Manganese’s (AMY) patented RecycLiCoTM process.
The RecycLiCoTM process provides a closed-loop recycling solution that recovers battery materials such as lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, and aluminum.
Sam Olson (pictured), CEO of Voltabox of Texas, said: “Voltabox is focused on managing the total lifecycle of our lithium-ion programs from initial manufacturing through second-use applications and eventually to end of life.
“A key part of this approach is the responsible disposal of spent battery cells, modules, and systems. We look forward to working with American Manganese to ensure the proper recycling of our lithium-ion components that have reached the end of their service life.”
Larry Reaugh, president and CEO of American Manganese, said: “Legislation in North America does not demand a transparent and sustainable battery metal supply chain, so the duty to establish a recycling framework is on environmentally responsible companies.”
In February, American Manganese announced the battery materials it recovered from disassembled electric vehicle battery packs reached purities of 98.91% (nickel), 99.72% (cobalt) and 99.27% (manganese).
