LG Chem is supplying a 32 MWh battery energy storage system, the largest in North America, to Southern California Edison as part of Tehachapi Wind Energy Storage Project (TSP). TSP is funded by the Department of Energy using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds.
LG Chem will be installing eight MW of lithium-ion batteries, connected to SCE’s Antelope Bailey 66kV system, at a substation in Tehachapi, California to provide maximum capacity in less than 20 milliseconds to ensure constant power supply.
"This project is one of the big milestones built upon the synergies of LG Chem's advanced battery technologies and experiences", said Dr. Seokhwan Kwak, Vice President of the Energy Solution Company at LG Chem. "Collaborating closely with Southern California Edison will provide key performance data and real-world experience."
The project is intended to assess how utility-scale storage can benefit the electrical grid when integrated with wind-powered electricity. In the Tehachapi area 4500 MW of wind power resources are due to be available by 2015.
