LG Chem is supplying 20MWh of lithium-ion batteries to Japanese telecom provider, Softbank, for use in UPS systems at transmission base stations.
The batteries will be supplied for use at 130 000 Softbank Mobile base stations around the country.
The UPS market is estimated to be worth US$804 million in Japan. LG Chem said it hopes to expand into this market, with another Japanese telecom provider seeking to switch UPS batteries from lead-acid to lithium-ion.
