Energy services company MITIE has secured funds from Aviva Investors and the UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) for a $55m biomass CHP energy centre serving two hospitals in the UK.
Aviva Investors has provided £18m ($27.5m) through its REaLM Infrastructure Fund, while the UK Green Investment Bank is providing £18m ($27.5m) through the Aviva Investors REaLM Energy Centres Fund.
The funds will be directed towards the development of new energy innovation centre, which will house a combined heat and power unit, biomass boiler and efficient dual fuel boilers, as well as heat recovery from medical incineration.
The new energy centre will serve Addenbrooke’s and Rosie hospitals and is touted to be among the largest energy centres in the UK. To be developed and operated by MITIE, the new energy centre, over a period of 25-year, will prevent emission of approximately 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The project is subjected to the final planning approval.
