Energy storage firm Zinc8 Energy Solutions announced plans on 17 January to deploy a 100kW/1MWh zinc-air battery energy storage system in New York state.
The project by Canadian firm, formerly MGX Renewables, follows a cooperation agreement with state public power organisation New York Power Authority (NYPA).
The system will be installed at an undisclosed demonstration site in New York state for an existing commercial and industrial customer of NYPA.
Under the cooperative agreement, the power authority will contribute $2.55 million to the project over a three-year period.
NYPA will collaborate with Zinc8 in a joint development project to help advance New York State governor Andrew Cuomo’s Green New Deal, which aims to deploy 3GW of energy storage by 2030.
Zinc8 Energy Solutions President and CEO Ron MacDonald said: “This collaboration is a milestone in our path to full commercialisation and underscores the growing demand for low-cost reliable long-duration energy storage.”
Zinc8 patented system stores energy in the form of zinc particles, similar in size to grains of sand. When the system is discharging the zinc particles are combined with oxygen drawn from the surrounding air. When charging zinc particles are regenerated, and oxygen is returned to the surrounding air.
